Luther Drops Two to #20 UW-Whitewater

The Luther baseball team had its chances this afternoon but dropped a twin bill to nationally ranked #20 UW-Whitewater here in Decorah. The Norse lost game one 5-4 in 11 innings and were defeated 7-5 in the nightcap after jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning.
In game one, Luther scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the ninth, tying the game at 4-4 and sending it into the extra frames. Whitewater scored the game winner in the top of the 11th. Left fielder Ben Prather started the inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Matt Millar two batters later.
The Norse pounded out 15 hits but left 15 base runners stranded. Designated hitter Mark Weber was 3-for-4. Six other Norse batters tallied two hits each. Jake Waddle, who was 2-for-5, drove in two runs.
Luther jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning of game two, thanks to three hits and one error by the Warhawks. Zack Topping drove in three runs in this frame with a basses loaded triple to right-center field.
The Warhawks scored once in the third and fourth innings, and then took the lead for good with a five-run fifth.
The Norse will return to Iowa Conference action tomorrow when they will host Simpson College. This one nine inning game will begin at 3:00 p.m. Luther won the first two games of this series 6-3, 7-2 played in Indianola on April 1.
