Wartburg Sweeps Luther in Opening Home Stand

Luther tallied five hits in two games and was defeated by Wartburg this afternoon by scores of 2-1 and 8-0. The two wins allowed the Knights to sweep the three-game series here in Decorah after posting a 2-3 victory in 13 innings yesterday afternoon.

In game one, a pitching duel between Wartburg starter Luke Albert and Luther starter Nate Todd, was all decided in the seventh and final inning. Wartburg scored two runs on three hits in the top half of the inning. Luther responded with one run on one hit and stranded two in the bottom half.

Albert (2-1) allowed just three hits, struck out five and walked four en route to the victory. Todd (1-2) allowed six hits and walked one.

Jake Waddle had two of Luther's three hits and drove in the lone run with a double to right center field that score Matt Bruhn.

In game two, the Knights tallied eight runs on 11 hits, scoring twice in the second, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Jerrold Martijn (2-3) threw a two-hit shutout striking out seven and walking four.

Luther's two hits were produced by Jeff Hiatt and Bruhn.

Box scores

The two losses drops Luther's overall record to 5-6, 0-3 in the Iowa Conference. Wartburg moved to 3-0 in league play, 9-9 overall.

The Norse will continue Iowa Conference action on Tuesday, April 1, when they will travel to Simpson College. This twin bill will begin at 1:00 p.m.
