Mar. 3, 2008
Four Luther College cross county runners have been named to the 2007 Division III All-Academic Men’s Cross Country Team by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). A total of 150 male student-athletes received the honor in 2007. In 2006, 114 male student-athletes received the award.
The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for this prestigious award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or higher and finish in the top-25 percent of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.
Luther’s four individuals were seniors Matthew Busche (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Carson Bruns (Loveland, Colo.), junior David McKay (Iowa City, Iowa/City), and freshman Erik Johnson (Duluth, Minn./East).
Luther was also one of 99 schools in Division III to receive the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award. To earn this honor, a team must have competed and compiled a team score at the regional meet. The team’s entire 2007 roster must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 or greater. Luther’s team GPA was a combined 3.27.
Under third year head coach Steve Pasche, Luther captured a second consecutive Iowa Conference championship and a league best 29th in school history. The Norse went on to qualify for the 2007 national championships for a 25th time and second year in a row, placing eighth at the national finale.
