Coe Snaps Luther's Four Game Win Streak
Oct. 27, 2007
Coe College snapped two streaks this afternoon, its own three-game losing streak and Luther's four-game win streak. The Kohawks racked up 389 yards of total offense en route to a 24-17 victory over the Norse in Cedar Rapids.
Coe quarterback Andy TeKippe did the majority of the damage, throwing for 215 yards and two touchdowns, while connecting with eight different receivers.
Luther had the lead twice but could not hold the Coe offense in check. The Norse took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter set up by a Coe fumble on Luther's 31-yard line. Ten plays later, Justin Feldt connected with Jesse Kent on a 10-yard touchdown pass.
Coe tied the contest with 4:58 remaining in the second frame, following a short Luther punt that gave the Kohawks great field position. Eight plays and 40-yards later, Tekippe found Sam Hammes in the end zone for the first of his two touchdown completions.
Luther's final lead of the game was set up after Tyler Sherden took the second half kick-off 65-yards to the Coe 11. Sherden, who rushed for 133 yards on 40 hard-fought carries, tallied 242 all-purpose yards for the afternoon. Feldt gave the Norse a short lived 14-7 lead thanks to a one-yard plunge four plays after Sherden's return.
On the ensuing kick-off, a personal foul on the Norse special teams, gave Coe excellent field position. Six plays later, Tekippe threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Nick Ratchford and leveled the score at 14-14.
The Kohawks went on to scored 10 unanswered points before Tyler Pease kicked a 23-yard field goal with 2:22 left in the game, in what proved to be the final points of the afternoon.
Coe could have easily won this contest 30-17, but thanks to block field goals by Trevor Theobald (23-yarder in the second quarter) and by Cody Webb (25-yarder in the fourth quarter) the Norse fell one touchdown short of sending this game into overtime.
Brandt Rost and Marcus Hendrickson led the defensive unit with 15 and 11 tackles respectively. Darrick Olson picked off his fourth pass of the season.
The loss drops Luther's Iowa Conference record to 3-3, 4-4 overall. Coe is also 3-3 in the IIAC, 5-3 overall. Both teams are tied for fourth place in the league standings.
The Norse will play their final home game of the season next week when they will host Simpson College in Carlson Stadium at 1:00 p.m.
