Luther Defeats Simpson in Double Overtime - Sherden Sets School Records

Tyler Sherden rushed for touchdowns on the first and last plays of the game, leading Luther to an exciting 47-41 double overtime victory over Simpson College here in Carlson Stadium.
Sherden took the opening snap of the ball game and found the end zone 24 yards later, scoring the first of his five touchdowns on the day. In the second overtime, he took Luther's first snap from scrimmage and rushed for the winning 25-yard score, capping off an afternoon in which he set two school records. He set the single game rushing record with 297 yards on 40 carries. He entered the game needing 292 yards to break the single season mark set by All-American Bernie Peeters of 1,442 set in 1971. On the final play of the game, Sherden broke this mark and will enter the final week of play with 1,448 yards.
Sherden also scored on runs of 54, 7 and on a one-yard plunge that gave the Norse a seven point lead in the first overtime.
Sherden completed the afternoon with 413 all-purpose yards, thanks to 98 in kick-off returns and 18 receiving.
Quarterback Justin Feldt threw for two touchdowns, connecting with Jesse Kent on the three-yard lob in the first quarter and on a 26-yard strike to Alex Torrisi in the second. Feldt was 11-of-19 for 96 yards.
Trailing 27-13 at halftime, the Storm racked up over 250 yards of total offense in the second half and outscored the Norse 21-7. The Storm sent the game into overtime following an 11 play, 78-yard drive that ended with 2:29 remaining in the game.
Both teams posted huge offensive numbers. Simpson was credited with 430 yards of total offense, while Luther had 411.
Luther defenders Trevor Theobald, Marcus Hendrickson and Brandt Rost all tallied double digits in tackles. Theobald and Hendrickson were credited with 12 each and Rost had 11. Bobby Kuennen recorded two sacks, giving him a team best 4.5 for the season.
The win increased Luther's Iowa Conference record to 4-3, 5-4 overall. Simpson fell to 2-5 in the IIAC, 3-6 overall.
This afternoon also marked the final time assistant coach Bob Naslund would roam the Norse sidelines. After 46 years (42 as a coach), Nas announced his retirement at the beginning of the year. The football team honored Nas this afternoon with the game ball. Following next week's game at the University of Dubuque, Nas will have been apart of 434 varsity football games for Luther as a player and coach.
The Norse will wrap up the season next week at Dubuque. This game will begin at noon.
