Despite a 152-yard effort by Tyler Sherden, the Luther College football team dropped an exciting 26-19 decision to St. Olaf College in the season opener for both teams in Northfield, Minn.

Sherden, who missed all of last season recovering from shoulder surgery, carried the football 31 times and reached the end zone on a 29-yard scamper with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Unfortunately, he was not able to perform for the majority of the second half and managed just 17 yards. He also led all return specialists with 86 yards of kick-off returns with a long of 35.

Trailing 18-12 midway through the fourth quarter, Adam Lamos plunged into the end zone form three-yards out, capping off an impressive seven-play, 61-yard drive. The extra point by Tyler Pease gave Luther a slim 19-18 lead that would only last for 56 seconds.

On the very next possession, St. Olaf scored what proved to be the game winning touchdown, a 40-yard strike from quarterback Matt Penz to Preston St. John. A successful two-point conversion gave the Oles the final points of the afternoon.

Justin Feldt had a solid outing in his first full game as the Norse starting quarterback. Feldt was 11 of 18 for 121 yards. He connected with Alex Torrisi and Jesse Kent four times each, with Torrisi recording 64 yards and Kent 51 yards.

Defensively, Marcus Hendrickson and Trevor Theobald were credited with 11 and 10 tackles respectively. Theobald also picked off one Oles pass. Hendrickson did the same, but it does not count as an official interception, as he picked off an attempted two-point conversion and returned the football 95-yards to score two points for the Norse early in the fourth quarter.

The Luther offense controlled the clock, racking up over 38 minutes in time of possession, en route to 322 yards in total offense. The Oles tallied 436 yards in total offense, 303 of which came in the air.

The Norse will be off for one week before beginning the Iowa Conference schedule at nationally ranked #8 Central College on Sept. 15. This game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
