Seth Streeter kicks 22-yard game winning field goal as luther defeats loras 20-17
Nov. 14, 2009
Seth Streeter kicked a 22-yard field goal with five seconds remaining on the clock that secured a 20-17 victory over Loras College this afternoon here in Carlson Stadium. Streeter's field goal was his second of the afternoon and capped off an eight-play, 67 yard drive by the Norse.
"What an outstanding ending for Norse football in 2009," stated Head Coach Mike Durnin. "We told Seth Streeter throughout the year he would step up and win a game and today was the day. To walk off the field and into the off season with a victory is a testimony to the perseverance of our seniors and our team."
Loras had just run off 17 unanswered points to tie the score at 17-17 with 2:57 remaining in the game.
"I was impressed by our offenses ability to not panic after Loras tied the game," commented Durnin. "We were able to move the ball down the field for a game winning field. Chris Reynolds proved during this drive that he is an excellent quarterback and field general."
Reynolds finished the day 15-of-27 for 164 yards. He also rushed for 42 yards on 12 carries, that included runs of 11 and 23 yards during the final scoring drive.
Luther took a 3-0 lead into the halftime locker room thanks to a 24-yard field goal by Streeter in the second quarter. Tyler Bass, who rushed for 47 yards on 12 carries, extended Luther's lead to 10-0 with a five-yard scamper early in the third. A blocked punt by Kyle McGivney, his second of the afternoon, was picked up by Bruce Clark who ran the ball 12 yards to the Loras end zone for a touchdown, giving Luther what looked to be a comfortable 17-0 lead.
"Football comes down to players making plays, such as Bruce Clark's blocked punt recovery for a touchdown," stated Durnin. "Today we made some plays and we came out on top with a win."
McGivney, who is ranked second in the NCAA III for tackles per game, was credited with a game high 14. He also broke-up the final desperation pass by the Duhawks on the final play of the game.
"Kyle McGivney was simply fantastic, both on defense and special teams," commented Durnin. "He has been a force throughout the season and today was no different."
The defensive unit held Loras to 262 yards of total offense and sacked Duhawk quarterback Vaughn Gesing seven times. Bobby Kuennen, who tallied eight tackles in his final appearance in a Norse uniform, led the sack attack with three for a loss of 23 yards.
The win gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 4-4. The Norse are posted an overall record of 5-5 for the third consecutive season.
Loras wraps of the year with a league mark of 2-6, 2-8 overall.
