luther defeated by simpson 5-3 in a shootout
Nov. 3, 2009
For the second time in as many years, the Luther College men's soccer team's season came to an end in the first round of the Iowa Conference Tournament. Last year, the Norse were defeated by the University of Dubuque 3-2 in overtime, and tonight they were defeated in a shootout by Simpson College 5-3.
The Norse applied plenty of pressure in the first half but were not able to capitalize despite firing seven shots, the most by either team in a single period. The Norse out shot the Storm 12-8, but managed just three shots on goal.
Simpson had an opportunity to end this game in regulation with 5:03 remaining, but Corey Miller missed a penalty kick wide to the right of the Norse net and goalkeeper Steve O'Meara.
Following two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, the teams lined up to decide this match in a shootout. Simpson jumped out a quick 2-0 lead and never looked back after Luther missed its opening attempt. Storm goalkeeper Josh Youngman knocked in the fifth and final penalty kick to secure the victory.
Officially, the match ends in a 0-0 double overtime tie, which gives the Norse an overall record 7-9-2. Simpson advances to the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament with a record of 6-8-4.
