Luther travels to gustavus adolphus for first three rounds of NCAA National Tournament

The NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Committee has selected the 41 teams that will participate in the NCAA Division III National Tennis Championships.

The teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the first, second and third rounds played at eight regional sites. The NCAA Team Championship will be held May 19-21 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont, Calif.

Luther College was an automatic qualifier for the national tournament after capturing the 2009 Iowa Conference championship. The Norse will travel to Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn., for first, second and third round action May 8-10.

On Friday, May 8, Luther will face Concordia, Wis. (14-10) at 2:00 p.m., while UW-Eau Claire (24-9) and UW-Whitewater (21-8) will face each other in the other opening round match at 4:30 p.m. The winners of these two matches will advance to second round action on Saturday. If Luther wins its opening round match, it will play University of Texas-Tyler (19-6) at 9:00 a.m.. The winner of the Whitewater – Eau Claire match will face host Gustavus Adolphus (25-8) at 3:00 p.m.. The winners of Saturday’s matches will play on Sunday, May 10 at Noon for the opportunity to advance to the team championship.

Luther is making its third consecutive trip to the national tournament and fourth in school history. Brian Huinker, who is in the midst of his seventh season, coaches the Norse. During his tenure, he has led the Norse to a dual meet record of 195-74.
