Norse win battle of regionally ranked teams

Luther wrapped up its annual spring trip to Orlando, Florida with a 6-3 victory over Calvin College. Calvin entered this match ranked #10 in the Central Region. Luther, now 21-4, is ranked #12.
Luther posted two wins in double play to jump start the victory. Max Piepkorn and Utsab Rijal posted an 8-1 win at #2. Scott Martin and Scott Sundstrom won at #3 8-5. Thomas Orser and Harrison Whiteley were defeated by Steve DeMaagd and Marcus Zeilstra, who are ranked #9 in the region by a score of 8-4.
In singles action, Aaron Gendron at #6 posted a three set victory after falling 0-6 in the first. Rijal at #3, Orser at #4 and Mark Mateski at #5 all won in straight sets.
Sundstrom was defeated by regionally ranked #9 Zeilstra 6-2, 6-1 at #1. Whiteley lost at #2 in three sets after winning the first set 6-4. DeMaagd came-from-behind to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Luther posted a 5-1 record on this trip. Its only loss was an 8-1 decision to NCAA II Flagler College. The Norse will return to action on April 4, when they will play three teams in Dubuque, Iowa. The Norse will square off with Dubuque, Ripon and Loras.
