Norse Increase Record to 11-2

The men's tennis team posted three wins this weekend increasing its overall record to 11-2. Head Coach Brian Huinker sent his squad in two different directions, one group playing in Davenport, Iowa the other in Rochester, Minn.

In Davenport, the Norse defeated Augustana-Rock Island 6-3 and NCAA II Quincy University 9-0.

After picking up one win in doubles action by Samriddh Burman and Mark Mateski (8-4) at #2, the Norse picked up five wins in singles action to secure the victory over Augustana-Rock Island.

Harrison Whitely increased his season record to 10-1 after posting a straight set victory at #1. Thomas Orser at #2, Mateski at #4 and Nate Jung at #5 also posted straight set victories. Tyler Zinnecker at #6 posted a hard-fought three set victory.

The 9-0 victory over Quincy University, was the fifth 9-0 victory of the year for the Norse. The Norse won every singles match in straight sets, except Orser at #2. Orser was leading 1-0 when his opponent retired.

In doubles action, Luther had 8-2 victories at both #1 and #2 and also recorded an 8-4 victory at #3.

In Rochester, things were a bit tighter against St. Olaf College. The Norse tallied two wins in doubles action and three in singles to secure the 5-4 victory.

Scott Martin and Max Piepkorn at #1 and Aaron Gendron and Scott Sundstrom at #2 doubles, posted 8-6 victories.

Sundstrom also was victorious at #1 singles 6-4, 6-1. Utsab Rijal posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory at #2, while Piepkorn secured a 6-3, 2-6, 10-3 victory at #4.

The Norse will return to action next weekend on the road and at home. On Feb. 27, Luther will play at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind. The next day, they will play DePauw University and Hope College at Depauw, located in Greencastle, Ind.

At home, the Norse will host Marian College at 12:30 p.m. and Simpson College at 6:30 p.m. Both matches will take place on Saturday, Feb. 28.
