Norse 7th at Meet of Champions - Sherden Claims 400 Meter Title

Luther picked up 32 of its 36 points in four events. Eleven points were tallied by the 4 x 400 and 4 x 100 relays. The 4 x 400 squad of Josh Patterson, Tom Blattner, Anthony Walls and Tyler Sherden finished third (3:22.02). The 4 x 100 foursome of Jon Olson, Alex Rustad, Phil Scruggs and Lucas Reidenbach was sixth (44.14). Carson Bruns, Mike Switzer and Dirk Marple all finished in the top-10 of the 5,000 meter run, and Tyler Sherden claimed the title in the 400 meter dash.
Sherden was the only individual champion for the Norse. He was clocked at 48.20 in his first event outdoors in over a year. Sherden edged Patrick Leonard of UW-Stevens Point who crossed the finish line in 48.69. Sherden's time was an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark.
Bruns, Switzer and Marple finished fourth, sixth and ninth respectively in the 5,000 meter run. Bruns posted a time of 15:39.82, while Switzer tallied a mark of 15:41.98 and Marple crossed the line in 16:12.05.
Scruggs reached the finals of the 100 meter dash with a qualifying time of 11.43. He ran an 11.39 in the finals and finished eighth.
Augustana won the team title with 215 points, followed by UW-Whitewater with 174.5 and UW-Oshkosh third at 171.50. Luther was seventh from the nine-team field with 36.
This week's competition will include some members of the squad running at the 99th Annual Drake Relays April 24-26, and the remainder of the team traveling to Loras College for the Loras Open the will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26.
