Day One Results - Session I

After the first session of the NCAA Division III National Wrestling Championships, Luther has four wrestlers alive in the championship bracket.
Travis Grawin (141) posted an 8-2 victory over unseeded William Horwath (Ithaca). Grawin, seeded #8 for the tournament, will face #1 seed Michael Bonora (Rhode Island) in the quarterfinals. Bonora enters this match with a record of 41-2. Grawin has tallied a season mark of 21-9. Both wrestlers were All-Americans last year. Bonora placed sixth at the national meet and Grawin placed seventh.
Yonny Quist (149), who was making his first appearance at the national meet, posted two wins this afternoon. Quist defeated John Barnett (College of New Jersey) 4-2 in his opening match. He advanced to the quarterfinals with a come-from-behind victory in which he tallied five points in the final 30 seconds, defeating #7 seed Frank Cammisa (Bridgewater State) 12-10. Cammisa entered this bout with a season record of 25-1. Quist will face #2 Willy Holst (Augsburg) in his opening match in session II.
John Miller (285) made quick work of his first opponent, posting a fall over Jake Taylor (Oswego State) in 18 seconds. Miller will face #2 seed Kyle Bilquist (Delaware Valley) in the quarterfinals this evening. Bilquist and Miller will face each other boasting records of 28-1 and 16-6 respectively.
Alec Bonander (197) will take the mat for the first time this evening after receiving a first round bye. Bonander the #2 seed, will face #7 Josh Holforty (UW-Eau Claire) who defeated Rob Kramer (Coe) 4-2 in the first round. A win will put Bonander in the semifinals and he will become an All-American for the second time in as many years.
Zach Bartlett (133) dropped his opening round match to #7 Raymond Sarinelli (College of New Jersey) by a score of 6-2. In the consolation bracket, he will await to wrestle the loser between #1 Adam Johnson (North Central) and Phillip Greene (Merchant Marine Academy) who face each other in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket. If Barlett win his match, he we be a 2008 All-American.
Nic Barclay (184) was defeated by #2 Michael Wilcox (Delaware Valley) by fall at 5:26. Barclay will need to win his next two matches to be able to an All-American. He faces Treavor LeBlanc (SUNY-Cortland) in his first match this evening in the consolation bracket.
