Luther Has 12 Place Winners at Pointer Open - Gregg Captures Title at 184

Luther opened the 2007-08 campaign at the UW-Stevens Point Open Nov. 10. The Norse returned home with 12 place winners that included one champion, four runner-up and three third place honors. The Pointer Open is divided into two divisions, with the Gold Division for returning competitors and the Silver Division for first-year wrestlers only.
A J Gregg (Decorah, Iowa) captured the 184 pound championship, posting a record of 3-0 en route to the title. He defeated Eric Bugenhagen from the University of Wisconsin-Madison 5-0 in the title bout. He advanced to the finals thanks to a 5-2 decision over Brendan Faust of UW-La Crosse and by injury default over unattached Mike Schmidt of UW-Whitewater.
Joining Gregg as place winners in the Gold Division included sophomore Lee Meirick (Protivin, Iowa/Turkey Valley) who placed third at 125, posting a record of 4-1 that included one fall; 2007 All-American, senior Travis Grawin (Elroy, Wis./Royall), placed third at 141 with a record of 4-1, that included two pins and two major decisions; junior Yonny Quist (Hilo, Hawaii) placed fifth at 141 with a mark of 2-2; 2006 All-American, junior John Miller (Kendal, Wis./Royall), placed second at HWT with a record of 3-1; and junior Allyn Plattner (Sabetha, Kan.) finished sixth at HWT with a record of 3-3.
First-year wresters who placed in the Silver Division included Zach Elliot (Prairie du Chien, Wis.) at 125, was second with a record of 4-1; Kevin Bokoski (Minooka, Ill.) was second at 133 with a record of 3-1; Jason Pyle (Morrill, Kan./Sabetha) was third at 149 with a record of 7-1, that included two pins and two major decisions; Lance Serbousek (Louisburg, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) was second at 157 with a record of 3-1; Dustin Balsley (Osage, Iowa) was fourth at 157 with a record of 5-2; and Bradon Reyerson (Glenville, Minn.) was fifth at 174 posting a record of 4-2.
The Norse will return to action Nov. 17. Some members of the team will travel to the University of Nebraska-Omaha Open and some will travel to the Augsburg Open. Luther’s first dual will be at UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
