Matthew Busche, a 2003 graduate of Wauwatosa (Wis.) High School, has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. He is the 28th Luther student-athlete to receive the honor. The scholarship carries a $7,500 award for postgraduate study. Busche was among the 29 male student-athletes from Divisions I, II and III fall sports to receive the prestigious scholarship, including 10 from NCAA Division III.

The NCAA annually awards 170 postgraduate scholarships to outstanding student-athletes throughout the nation. To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent, and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated.  The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics.  The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

He was Luther’s highest finisher at the NCAA Division III National Championships, leading the Norse to an eighth place finish. Finishing 26th from the field of 279 runners, he earned All-America honors for a second time.

Academically, Busche was a three-time Academic All-Iowa Conference honoree, who maintained an overall grade-point-average of 3.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale. He named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII Track and Field/Cross Country Team as a first team selection; and the U. S.
