March 12, 2008

The Luther women’s basketball team in conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), hosted the second annual “Think Pink Night” on Feb. 9.

Started in 2007, “Think Pink Night” has been used as a tool across the nation by the WBCA and women’s basketball teams at all NCAA and NAIA institutions to help increase the awareness for the research and prevention of breast cancer. Coaches, players and fans were asked to wear pink to the ball games to help support this cause during “Think Pink Week” Feb. 8-17.

On March 11, the WBCA announced that over 1,100 schools participated this year and had raised over $600,000 and reached over 600,000 fans.

The Luther Student Athlete Activities Council (SAAC) in cooperation/conjunction with the Luther Women's Basketball Team, Paul Wanless from the Decorah Sport Shop, and volunteers from the Decorah community, passed out pink ribbons and sold pink t-shirts to help raise money for this worthy cause and raised $500 and increase of over $120 from last year’s total. This money was sent to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

Kay Yow, North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, is a past president and founding member of the WBCA, and a galvanizing voice for the Association. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and is currently battling the disease for the third time. In her 36 years as a head coach at the college-level, Yow is one of only six Division I head women's basketball mentors to achieve 700 career victories. Yow was also the head coach of the 1988 US Olympic Team that won the gold medal in Seoul.
