Luther Crowned Iowa Conference champions
Oct. 31, 2009
For the first time since 2004 the Luther College women's soccer team was crowned the Iowa Conference champions. The Norse secured the league title after defeating Coe College 1-0 tonight here in Decorah.
The league title is the fourth in school history and means the Norse will be the #1 seed for the six-team Iowa Conference Tournament that will begin next week.
Kendra Ledel scored what proved to be the game winner at 6:48 unassisted. Ledel's goal was her fourth of the year.
Once again the Norse defensive unit held an opponent scoreless. The Norse have not allowed a goal for eight consecutive matches. Tonight's shutout was the ninth of the season and lowered goalkeeper Hannah Wright's goals-against-average to 0.86. Wright was credited with four saves this evening.
The win gives the Norse an Iowa Conference record of 6-1-1, 10-6-2. Coe falls to 4-4-0 in league play, 6-11-1.
As the #1 seed of the tournament, the Norse will receive a first round bye and will play the winner of the #5 seed vs. #4 seed on Friday, Nov. 6, in the semifinals. This year's semifinals and championship matches will be hosted by the men's regular season champion Loras College Nov. 6-7.
