Luther Defeats #15 Augustana - Captures Team Title of the Classic Soccer Tournament

Thanks to three goals in the final 32 minutes of play, the Norse defeated nationally ranked Augustana (IL) 3-1 this afternoon here in Decorah. Augustana entered the weekend with a record of 3-0 and was ranked 15th in the NCAA III by D3kicks.com. The victory increased the Norse record to 2-3.
Augustana took a 1-0 lead at 53:25 only to see Luther tie the match five minutes later. Ashley Meirick drove in her second goal of the season off a long cross from Jill Nerka. Emily Ironside scored the game winner at 74:55 and also knocked in the final tally of the afternoon at 81:36. Lisa Torgerson assisted on her first goal and Kelsey Balk assisted on her second. Ironside has now scored a team high four goals and leads the squad in total points with nine. Christina Soward picked up her second win of the year turning away six shots on goal.
The victory also secured the team championship of the Classic Soccer Tournament. Luther tallied 11 points for the tournament and finished ahead of Augustana and Maryville University that both had nine points. Augustana was the runner-up based on the first tie breaker of the tournament - head-to-head competition. Augustana defeated Maryville last night 2-1.
Four Norse were named to the all-tournament team. This list included Ironside, Balk, Meirick and Nerka.
Luther returns to action at home on Sept. 13, when it will host Bethel University at 5:00 p.m.
