Luther Sweeps Dubuque - Double Header Moved to Decorah
April 9, 2008
Due to wet field conditions in Dubuque, today's Iowa Conference double header between the University of Dubuque and Luther was moved to Decorah. The combination of a solid effort by the Norse pitching staff and 10 hits in both games, the Norse swept the Spartans 5-0, 4-0.
In game one, the Norse scored once in the second and twice in both the fourth and fifth innings en route to the victory. Megan Weirather was 3-for-3 and scored twice. Tiffany Kruse and Jackie Miller both tallied two hits, while Kayla Denner drove in two runs. Ashley Hoffman put the first run on the scoreboard with a solo shot over the center field fence.
Shallyn Duffy (7-3) allowed just three hits, walked three and struck out four in six full innings of work. Kim Lambert struck out two batters to close the deal for the Norse in the seventh.
In game two, back-to-back home runs by Tami Magner and Hoffman started the three-run sixth inning that broke this game wide open. Magner's blast hit the top of the score board located in right-center field and was her 11th of the year. On the very next pitch, Hoffman pounded the ball well beyond the left-field fence for her fourth home run of the season.
Danielle Armbruster drove in Luther's fourth run of the game with a single up the middle in the seventh.
BreAnn VanDeer (6-2) went the distance in the circle. She faced 25 batters, struck out 12 and did not allow a walk.
The two wins increased Luther's Iowa Conference record to 5-3, 19-7 overall. Dubuque fell to 0-8 in league play, 9-13 overall.
The Norse are schedule to play Buena Vista University at home on Saturday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m.
