Luther Sweeps St. Olaf in Season Opening Double Header
March 10, 2008
The Norse pitching staff allowed four hits in 10 innings of play, as Luther opened its 2008 season with a sweep of St. Olaf College today in the Rosemount Dome (Minn.). The Norse blanked the Oles 8-0 in the first game and 9-0 in the second. Both games were called after five innings of action.
In game one, all-conference pitcher Shallyn Duffy allowed two hits and struck out six, while facing 17 batters. Kim Hess, Tami Magner and Tiffany Kruse were all credited with two rbi. Magner's two rbi came on solo shots in the first and third innings, increasing her career total to 25, one shy of tying the career school record. Tiffany Kruse also hit a solo home run in the second.
A six-run fourth inning blew game two wide open as the Norse secured the twin bill sweep. Megan Weirather led a Norse attack that produced 12 hits, with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Weirather and Kayla Denner were both credited with two rbi.
BreAnn VanDeer pitched three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight, en route to her first victory of the season. Kim Lambert pitched the final two frames and struck out four.
The Norse will return to action this weekend when they will travel to St. Louis, Mo. to play Augustana-Rock Island and Maryville College. The Norse will square off with both teams on March 15 and 16.
