Decorah, Iowa - Molly Fiala of Coe College and Amanda Sta Romana and her doubles partner Elizca Buys of Carthage College are the 2006 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Champions. Luther College hosted the region championships Sept. 22-24.
In singles play, #2 seed Fiala defeated the #4 seed Sta Romana. Fiala posted an exciting 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) victory to advance to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers to be held Oct. 12-15.
Fiala advanced to the championship match by defeating #3 seed Lauren Hom from Gustavus Adolphus College 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals.
Sta Romana advanced to the championship match by default. The top seed of the tournament, Jordan Hook of Wheaton College, defaulted to Sta Romana because of a school policy that does not allow its athletes to compete on Sunday. Sta Romana reached the semi-finals with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over #5 seed Jaime Gaard of Gustavus.
Despite her disappointing loss in the singles championship, Sta Romana will still be making a trip to the national tournament. Sta Romana and Buys, who were the top seed of the doubles championships, posted a 9-8 (7-5) victory over #2 seed Hom and Sierra Krebsbach of Gustavus in the championship match.
Earlier in the day, this Carthage duo advanced to the championship tilt by defeating Erin Fekete and Rachel Benn from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 8-6.
Gustavus reached the finals by default over the Wheaton College duo of Hook and Karly Olson who were the #3 seed. Gustavus reached the semi-finals with an 8-4 victory over Julie Tellefson and Angie Riedel from UW-La Crosse.
