Four Norse Earn All-Conference Honors
Oct. 16, 2007
Four members of the women's tennis team earned all-conference honors at the 2007 Iowa Conference Individual Championships held Oct. 12-13. To earn this honor, an individual must reach the quarterfinals of the A singles bracket or reach the semifinals of the A doubles bracket.
Molly Beyer and Alana Humpal were all-conference in singles play, while Amy Christenson and Kelsie Allen earned this honor in doubles.
Beyer became a three-time all-conference performer posting victories over Jenn Knobbe of Central (6-1, 6-4) and Martha Davis of Simpson (6-3, 6-0), before being eliminated from the tournament by Andrea Schupbach of Coe (6-2, 6-1). Schupbach went on to place third.
Humpal advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Lindsay Dunkirk of Loras (6-0, 6-4) and Kara Klein of Coe (3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (1)). She was defeated by #2 seed Hannah Jensen of Coe (6-1, 6-0).
Christenson and Allen placed fourth in doubles. This duo advanced to the semifinals by posting an 8-0 victory over Whitney Visser and Hillary Baehr of Central, plus an 8-2 win over teammates Molly Beyer and Brynne Zinnecker in the quarterfinals. Hannah Jensen and Hillary Allen of Coe defeated the Norse duo 9-7 in the semifinals. In the fourth place match, Caryl Abeyta and Pavla Brachova of Cornell posted and 8-2 victory.
Justine Allen was crowned the individual champion of Flight B singles. Allen won five matches in straight sets en route to the 2007 title.
The Norse will return to action for the final time this fall when they will travel to the six-team Iowa Conference Team Championship. This two day tournament will be played at the University of Iowa Tennis Complex, Iowa City and at Coe College Oct. 19-20. The Norse (6-1, 10-1) are the #2 seed and will play the winner of #3 Central (6-2, 9-3) vs. #6 Cornell (3-4, 7-7) match on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 9:00 a.m. If the Norse win this match, they will play for the 2007 IIAC championship at noon. Both of these matches will be played in Iowa City.
The Norse have won 23 of 25 IIAC championships since 1982. Last year, Luther finished third after dropping a 5-4 decision to eventual league champions Coe and posting a 5-2 victory over Central.
