Split Squad Post Wins Over Cornell and Wartburg

Head Coach Brian Huinker sent one-half of his team to Mount Vernon and the other half to Waverly to play Cornell College and Wartburg College. The Norse returned home with 7-2 victories over both teams.
The two wins increased Luther's overall record to 23-6. Luther's 23 wins ties the second best win total in school history of 23-4 set in 1985-86. The Norse are four dual meet victories away from tying the single season school record of 27 wins set during the 1983-84 campaign.
In the Cornel match, the Norse won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests. #2 Amy Christenson (16-4), #3 Justine Allen (15-2), and #5 Sarah Evans (4-2) all posted straight set victories. #4 Sara Dale (9-1) won a hard fought three set decision and #6 Laura Williams (6-2) won by default.
Allen and Fran Fairfield at #1 doubles and Evans and Williams at #3 both posted wins of 8-6.
Luther swept the doubles competition and posted wins in four of six singles matches en route to the victory. #2 Alana Humpal (19-9), #3 Brynne Zinnecker (18-7), #4 Kelsie Allen (19-7), and #5 Kathryn Nichols (6-4) all won in straight sets.
The Norse will return to action this weekend with a trip to the Minneapolis area. Luther and Macalester will square of on Friday, March 11 at the Lifetime Fitness Center, Lakeville, Minn. at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, Luther will play the University of St. Thomas at the Baseline Tennis Center at 1:30 p.m.
