Norse Defeat Tommies and Scots - Three Shy of School Record

The women's tennis team posted two wins over the weekend. The Norse defeated the Macalester Scots 7-2 and the the University of St. Thomas Tommies 5-4. The two victories increased Luther's overall record to 25-6, three shy of setting the school record for wins in a single season.

Luther tallied straight set victories in five of six singles matches and won two of three matches in doubles en route to the 7-2 victory over Macalester. #2 Alana Humpal, #3 Brynne Zinnecker, #4 Kelsie Allen, #5 Fran Fairfield and #6 Amy Christenson all posted straight set victories.

In doubles play, Humpal and Kathryn Nichols posted an 8-3 victory at #2, while Christenson and Allen were victorious at #3 by a score of 8-2.

For the first time this season, the University of St. Thomas was defeated by an NCAA III school, when the Norse posted the 5-4 victory.

In singles play, #1 Molly Beyer, #2 Humpal, #4 Allen and #5 Fairfield recorded victories. Fairfield secured her win with a 10-8 third set tie-breaker. Luther's lone victory in doubles was at #1 when Beyer and Zinnecker recorded a close 9-8 decision.

The Norse will travel to UW-La Crosse for a dual on Tuesday, April 15. This will be followed by a trip to Cedar Rapids on Saturday, April 19 for the Iowa Conference NCAA III National Championships qualifying tournament. The top four teams from the IIAC fall tournament will square off to see who will earn the automatic bid to the NCAA III National Championships. #1 Coe will play #4 Wartburg and #2 Luther will face #3 Central in the semifinals. These matches will be immediately followed by the championship tilt.
