A two-sport athlete, Lauren was crowned Iowa Conference champion in the javelin. Her throw of 137-0 smashed the old mark of 131-11 set in 1997. She also qualified for the NCAA III national outdoor championships. For her efforts, she was voted Most Valuable Performer for Field Events by her teammates.
"Initially I didn't want to go to Luther because 11 members of immediate family had gone to school here. I wanted to do my own thing. After a visit, I realized that Luther was different because I could be involved with great science and music programs and be a two-sport athlete in a strong athletic program simultaneously.
"My most rewarding experience outside athletics was when I took a J-term class in South Africa and had the opportunity to work with underprivileged youth in Cape Town and Kwazulu Natal. To be able to make a difference in those kids lives was the greatest feeling in the world."
